Puppy Feeding Chart by Age and Weight

A practical guide to how much and how often to feed your growing puppy.

Puppies grow very quickly and need more calories and nutrients than adult dogs. Feeding the right amount at each stage helps support healthy growth without putting too much stress on developing bones and joints (especially important for large breeds).

How Often to Feed a Puppy

  • 8–12 weeks → 3 to 4 meals per day
  • 3–6 months → 3 meals per day
  • 6–12 months → 2 to 3 meals per day
  • Adult (usually 12+ months) → 2 meals per day

Large and giant breeds may continue growing until 18–24 months and often benefit from staying on a growth formula longer.

General Puppy Feeding Guidelines

These are approximate daily amounts using typical puppy dry food (around 380–420 kcal per cup). Always adjust based on your puppy’s body condition and the calorie information on the bag.

Toy & Small Breeds (expected adult weight under 20 lb)

  • 2–3 months: ½ to 1 cup per day (split into 3–4 meals)
  • 3–6 months: ¾ to 1½ cups per day
  • 6–12 months: 1 to 1¾ cups per day

Medium Breeds (expected adult weight 20–50 lb)

  • 2–3 months: 1 to 2 cups per day
  • 3–6 months: 1½ to 3 cups per day
  • 6–12 months: 2 to 3½ cups per day

Large Breeds (expected adult weight 50–90 lb)

  • 2–3 months: 2 to 3½ cups per day
  • 3–6 months: 3 to 5 cups per day
  • 6–12 months: 3½ to 6 cups per day

Important Tips for Puppy Feeding

  • Choose a food labeled for growth or “all life stages” that meets AAFCO standards.
  • Large-breed puppies should not grow too fast — controlled growth is healthier for joints.
  • Feel the ribs: you should be able to feel them easily without excess fat covering.
  • Weigh your puppy every 1–2 weeks and adjust portions as needed.
  • Switch to adult food gradually when your vet recommends it (usually around 12 months for most breeds).
