How Much Should I Feed My Dog?
A simple, practical guide to dog feeding amounts based on weight, age, and activity level.
One of the most common questions dog owners ask is: “How much should I feed my dog?” The answer depends on your dog’s weight, age, activity level, and the calorie content of the food you use.
There is no single number that works for every dog. A small inactive dog needs far fewer calories than a large working dog. The best way to find the right amount is to calculate daily calorie needs and then convert that into cups or grams of your specific food.

General Feeding Guidelines by Weight
These are rough starting points for adult dogs with typical activity (using average dry food around 350–400 kcal per cup):
- 10 lb (4.5 kg) → about ¾ to 1 cup per day
- 20 lb (9 kg) → about 1¼ to 1¾ cups per day
- 30 lb (14 kg) → about 1¾ to 2½ cups per day
- 50 lb (23 kg) → about 2½ to 3½ cups per day
- 70 lb (32 kg) → about 3¼ to 4½ cups per day
- 90 lb (41 kg) → about 4 to 5½ cups per day
Always check the feeding guide on your specific food bag, because calorie density varies a lot between brands.
Factors That Change How Much to Feed
- Age – Puppies need more calories for growth. Senior dogs often need fewer.
- Activity – Working or very active dogs need significantly more food.
- Neutered/Spayed – Neutered dogs usually need about 20% fewer calories.
- Body condition – If your dog is overweight, feed less. If underweight, feed more.
- Food type – Wet food has fewer calories per volume than dry food.
How Often Should You Feed?
Most adult dogs do well with two meals per day. Puppies under 4–6 months usually need 3–4 smaller meals. Free-feeding (leaving food out all day) makes it harder to control weight.
Important Tips
- Weigh your dog regularly and adjust food if needed.
- Treats should not make up more than 10% of daily calories.
- Change food amounts gradually over several days.
- Always provide fresh water.
